Farewell my Joomla! friend... Adios! ©
The hardest part of any friendship is when it's time to say goodbye. As much as we might like things to stay the same, change is an inevitable part of life. Same with Joomla! friends, it is hard letting go of the Joomla! version with which we started.
The Joomla release cycle includes Long Term Support (LTS) releases which are supported for 21 months and Short Term Support (STS) releases that are supported for 7 months. As we know, Joomla 1.5 was released on January 22, 2008. The latest release of this version was 1.5.26 on March 27, 2012. This version was the first to attain long term support (LTS).
While it is probable that Joomla 1.5 websites will still operate despite this version falling out of support, security vulnerability fixes may no longer be available.
Joomla! birdies, migrate!
April 2012 marks the official end-of-life of Joomla! 1.5. With Joomla 3.0 now released, support for Joomla! 1.5 will fade away starting April of 2013.
This however, does not mean that Joomla 1.5 websites will stop working the day after the end of life date is reached. They will still work, however no security updates/support will be available! The decision will come down to your websites objectives, what 3rd party extensions they use (and whether they exist for Joomla 2.5) and how much time and money a migration will cost.
In order to get technical support, you will need to upgrade your website running on Joomla! 1.5 to at least Joomla! 2.5 or 3.0. If you are using versions within Joomla! 1.7 to 2.5, no need to upgrade to Joomla 3.0 as we still have extensions compatible for them.
There are some Joomla! users who do not want to migrate for some reasons. For you to note: Joomla! developers do not give any more support for Joomla 1.5 , so no security updates are available. What does this mean? It means that your Joomla! 1.5 website is a great piece of meat for hackers! You are also going to have some problems with finding support for Joomla! extensions for your website.
Sticking with Joomla! 1.5? No worries!
Your website will go on working as it was, however it will no longer be as secure as it was.
J! Migration: How to-s
So, you have set your mind on migrating? Good for you! First of all, update your Joomla! 1.5 to its latest version released, i.e. 1.5.26 and then get your wings ready for migration!
Here's what you need to know... If you think it is going to be as simple as installing the files of new Joomla! version over the existing one, then I might disappoint you at this step. Migration does involve some steps which you need to do manually. The Joomla! developers worked hard to create a totally new application for Joomla! 2.5, they changes the database structure and most of the coding, so you need to take the migration process more seriously.
First and foremost, you just got to have a good knowledge of Joomla!, better if you know where the files are installed and about their structure. The duration of migration process fully depends on your Joomla! website's characteristics, like the size.
Moving from Joomla 1.5 to 2.5? The first step is to have your website's backup! Done? Then go on listing all your third party extensions on your website and Google it to find if there are available updates of that very extensions for Joomla! 2.5 so as to use on your website later on. And last, but not the least, test before having your website running online.
J! Migration completed! Adios,Joomla! 1.5, Adios!
